Got Some Bad News...taking a break from blogging

A tragic accident has rocked our community and many outside of it...We lost two beautiful young girls, one of them being a very close friend of mine. Because of this, I can't get myself to even think about reading, let alone sit down and concentrate on it. So, I am taking a break from book blogging until my I feel a little more stable. Ta ta for now...
RIP my friends.

Shadow Kiss (V.A. #3) - Richelle Mead

For this book, I am just going to do a quick review, a few sentences on what I thought of the book...
OVERALL RATING: 4/5
Okay...so the ending of this book was, intense...like wow. Lots of action. I might even have to admit to shedding a tear or two. I would say this is my favorite of the series so far. Richelle Mead is really starting to throw in some curve balls to the plot. I think the books will continue to get more interesting with more crazy surprises from our vampire and half vampire friends. You should read them... :)

From Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy Website:
" It's springtime at St. Vladimir's Academy, and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since making her first Strigoi kills, Rose hasn't been feeling quite right. She's having dark thoughts, behaving erratically, and worst of all...might be seeing ghosts.
As Rose questions her sanity, new complications arise. Lissa has begun experimenting with her magic once more, their enemy Victor Dashkov might be set free, and Rose's forbidden relationship with Dimitri is starting to heat up again. But when a deadly threat no one saw coming changes their entire world, Rose must put her own life on the line--and choose between the two people she loves most. "

Frostbite (V.A. #2) - Richelle Mead

OVERALL RATING: 4/5
I am finding out that it's hard to review books in a series...because they are often very similar!

Quoted from Richelle Mead's website:
"Rose Hathaway's got serious guy trouble.  Her gorgeous tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason has a huge crush on her, and she keeps getting stuck in her best friend Lissa's head while she's making out with her boyfriend, Christian.  (So not cool).
Then a massive Strigoi attack puts St. Vladimir's on high alert, and the Academy crawls with Guardians--including the legendary Janine Hathaway...Rose's formidable, long-absent mother.  The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy's not taking any risks.  This year, St. Vlad's annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.
But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only provide the illusion of safety.  When three students run away to strike back against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them.  Only this time, Rose--and her heart--are in more danger than she ever could have imagined..."

General: I must say, I liked this one better than the last. It graduated from dead bunnies to dead vampires, making it much more interesting.
Characters: In this book, of course, the characters from the last book continued from the last one. They haven't changed a whole lot, but they are experiencing new problems and adventures that are really affecting them and bringing them more knowledge. We also have some new characters...who prove their reason for becoming twined into the storyline by creating some interesting plot twists.
Plot: Like the first book, I thought the plot had a nice tempo to it. I enjoyed this book more because its plot was more captivating. There was more action, and the action was more...serious? suspenseful?, plain and simply, better than the stuff in the last book.
Writing style/ POV: Once again, the POV was from Rose's perspective. I think she has matured slightly in this book...she does swear less... Still, we do see our same old Rose though. She still has a spunky attitude, confusing thoughts about guys and a mind of her own, besides her "bond" with Lissa, of course. However, I think there was less of her immature side showing as she was trying to prove to Dimitri that she was worthy of being treated like an adult. The writing style still fits Rose's persona, so that's good.
Re-readable? I actually already started re-reading it, on a long car ride today, so yes!
Intended audience: Same as first book, teen (girls?).
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy/Paranormal, could also be considered romance.
I liked: how the plot definitely became more interesting, and how Rose was able to prove to herself and the others that her guardian training had paid off. (read and you will see what I mean) I also liked how there was more magic used in this book.
I disliked: the scenes between J.H. and Rose. I am using initials so I don't give anything away :) Some of those scenes I just wanted to skip through because of the tension and awkwardness between them. Of course, it also made the plot more interesting, which was good, but I don't know. I just wanted to get back to the action. Probably not a big deal to others, it was the first thing I thought of after thinking hard about what bugged me!

My Poor Baby...

Guys! My eReader is broken :/
And to think yesterday I was just going on about how awesome it is...well it is awesome, just not when it's broken.
So it has these weird lines on its screen, they just kind of appeared out of the blue. I talked to a Sony tech dude and I reset it three different times, three different ways, no change. Also, since I have had it for over a year, a refurbishment is no longer covered by my warranty. *tears* So I guess I gotta ship it away for probably costly repairs or buy myself a new one. Who knows what I will do.
Very depressing, I know.
On a good note- I finished Frostbite in a day, ha, and will be posting a review soon! I don't know what to read next. Since I hit my maximum of elibrary books that I can have at one time on my reader and my reader's screen is messed up, I might have to actually go get a book from -GASP- the LIBRARY! The real, physically existing and filled with books type of library. Another downside to that is, I can't go until Tuesday because it is not open today or tomorrow :/
Maybe I will have to read the Hunger Games or a book by Stephanie Meyer, because I own them and they are on the 575 List! What do you think? I could always buy a book using the iPod touch too...
Well...I will try to get right on that review!

Vampire Academy (#1) - Richelle Mead

OVERALL RATING: 4/5
Firstly: I have read some not so great reviews on this book, after writing this review, and although I do agree with some points made, my first thoughts after reading this book were good ones. So obviously I am going to write a good review, because the book left me feeling good and I base my reviews on my reading experience and thoughts following. I am also one of those fairly optimistic people who don't easily shun the work of others.
Quoted from Richelle Mead's website:

"Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with an unbreakable bond to the earth's magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest and most dangerous vampires--the ones who never die.
The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend, makes her a Dhampir; she is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making her one of them.
After two years of illicit freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir's Academy, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. Rose will continue her Dhampir education. Lissa will go back to being Queen of the elite Moroi social scene. And both girls will resume breaking hearts.
Fear made Lissa and Rose run away from St. Vladimir's--but their world is fraught with danger both inside and out of the Academy's iron gates. Here, the cutthroat ranks of the Moroi perform unspeakable rituals and their secretive nature and love of the night creates an enigmatic world full of social complexities. Rose and Lissa must navigate through this dangerous world, confront the temptation of forbidden romance, and never once let their guard down, lest the Strigoi make Lissa one of them forever..."

General: Yes, I thought this would be just another paranormal love story, but it wasn't. It was an odd mix between the dramas of high school, the power of friends, magic, romance...paranormal beings...etc.. and I think you should check it out. Another thing: I found myself confused for a little while at the beginning of the book because the characters often referred to certain incidents, people or things that I was absolutely clueless about. Don't worry, those little "holes" will be filled.
Characters:  I think I generally enjoyed the characters in this book. The two main characters, Lissa and Rose, seemed very different but shared similarities that made them work well together. They both are very determined girls, but one major difference, and it is mentioned in the book, is that Lissa is very cautious and Rose more reckless with a somewhat rebellious attitude. I like the contrast between these two, as well as the strength of the bond they share.
Plot: I also enjoyed the plot. It wasn't too slow and boring, nor was it very fast and action packed. I think it hit a happy medium. I wasn't super addicted to this book and I was able to put it down at times, but it did catch my attention well enough that I finished it in less than two days. I did, however, find myself fighting the urge to go lock myself away and just read, read and read until I finished it.
Writing style: I did like the writing style in this novel. It was in first person, from Rose's point of view. She had a spunky attitude but yet an in depth knowledge of the ways in the world which was briefly brought into light during some parts. I found myself amused and compelled by the narrative and also I was able to relate with her. However, although she seemed mature in some parts, especially concerning her protectiveness over Lissa, she definitely had some lapses of immaturity and her morals were lacking at times. This is somewhat explained near the end of the book.
I could easily picture the characters and the scenery so that was a plus.

Re-readable? Yes, I think so.
Intended audience: Teens, probably fourteen and older, more specifically girls but guys may enjoy it also, I don't know!
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy/Paranormal, could also be considered romance.
I liked: the main characters. I think their relationship was really unique, especially because they would do absolutely anything for each other. This was an important part of the book that I thought was pretty neat.
I disliked: the emphasis on physical attraction in this book. Sure a lot of that does happen in the teen world, but I believe relationships should be based more on the actual relationship (communication, getting to know a person) aspect than lust. This book may have been a bit old for some of the younger teens, with the swearing and physical interacting, but it all depends how you were raised and what you've been exposed to prior to reading it, I guess. I mean it wasn't really that bad. But for some it may be. Just a warning.

eReaders!

I own a Sony eReader, and I love it. Of course nothing compares to the feeling of cracking open the first page of a novel, but I think eReaders make up for that loss in other ways. I don't know if this post will be an eReader vs traditional book sort of thing, but I am going to write about the things I love about my eReader. Of course, I do love our traditional paper books just as much, for different reasons.
First, I love their portability. I can take 30 books with me wherever I go, and it takes up less space than if I were to bring one actual book. Awesome. No more shoving my suitcases full of books I want to read. Just slip in my eReader and its charger.
Second, I love how easy it is to get a book. I don't have to go to the library or drive to the city if the library doesn't have the book I want. I can just buy it online, or use my local online library catalog and download it onto my device in a matter of seconds. Very convenient for someone who loves to read, and reads quickly. The only thing with online book shopping, if I am not using the library or getting books from the free section, I find it is very easy to spend a fair bit of cash, very quickly. And like any other technology related thing, you have to know what you are doing, or have a slight clue as to what's what before you can successfully use it.
Third, it requires little hands on use when reading. For example, when alone, I do enjoy reading as I eat my meals. Although it does risk me spilling on my book/eReader, I do it anyways. Yes, very rebellious, I know. Anyways, with a traditional book, I always have to keep one hand on the book to keep the page from flipping or else put something on the page which of course blocks the words. I like to use two hands when I eat, say one to keep my bowl steady and the other to scoop my cereal up with my spoon. This is why an eReader is handy. I just set in on the table beside my plate, and I can use both hands to eat while I read. All I need to use my hands for is to touch a button to "flip" the page...ahh.
Fourth, the screen does not hurt your eyes! It is just like looking at paper. However, that does have a downside, because unless your eReader has some sort of backlight that can be turned on (not sure if any models have this or not) you will indeed need to have a booklight or something similar to use if you are reading in low light.

I am sure I could go on, but I am curious as to know which you prefer, eReader or book? Also, if you own an eReader, what do you have? Kindle? Nook? Kobo? What do you like best about it?
I have a Sony eReader, as I mentioned earlier. It is the PRS-300 Reader Pocket Edition, in red and it is pretty simple as far as these devices go. No touch screen, no internet, none of that fancy stuff. Just books. It's all I need really, though if I were to upgrade, I would get one with wifi. It would enable me to download new books almost anywhere, and I enjoy having the world wide web on the go, since my cellular's internet service is crap. But that's a different story.

575 Books

So, the other day I was searching the webs for books I should read and review, and I came across this list: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1816.Best_Teen_Girl_Books. I decided I should make a goal for my blog, to eventually read and review every book on this list. Sure, that's a heck of a lotta books, but oh well, it gives me a guideline as to what to read and will hopefully motivate me to read as much as I can! I may not read them in the order they are listed, but I will read them all. One day :P Some of them I will be rereading, because I have read a few of them before. Also, because there are series on the list, I will only review up to three books from one series. I am not reading and reviewing 12 book series, no way. But I will read and review a quarter of a 12 book series! Or trilogies or whatever. Just no more than three books from one series.
That's the game plan, girls and boys. :)

The Start of a Legacy

...or not.

Well, hello there. The name's J.c., and I am the creator of YA Overindulgence. I have affectionately nicknamed myself the Overindulger, because I frequently overindulge in literature of the YA sort. Yes, this is a book review blog, or at least, it is the early stages of one. Please bear with me as I get this up and running. There will be many changes happening to the site as I toy around with the layout, colors, widgets etc until I am satisfied. If I changed something and you thought it was better before, let me know!

I am currently reading What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen, so that will be my first review. This book is not on the list, so my first review will be on City of Bones or possibly a different book! But until then, I leave you with this quick little hello and will return to creating the site!
Peace out, J.c. <3
